What we build

A walkway is the part of a yard people touch every day, which is why an uneven one gets noticed immediately.

Level and drained

A path that rocks underfoot was set on the wrong base

Walkways fail in two ways. They heave when water sits under them and freezes, and they rock when the base was never properly compacted.

Both are dealt with before the stone goes down, by digging to depth, compacting, and giving the water a way out.

  • Dug to depth and compacted, so the path does not settle through the first wet season.
  • Fall set across the path, so water runs off instead of sitting under the stone.
  • Steps built into the slope, tied into the ground rather than stacked on the surface.

We have hired this crew for various projects on our acreage. The latest project was an equestrian riding arena, which turned out excellent. They are always willing to take on tasks and challenges with great outcome. Their operators and labourers are hard-working and willing to put in the time to get a job done.

Common questions

Why does my walkway heave in winter?

Water sitting under it. When that water freezes it expands and lifts the surface. The fix is drainage and a base that lets water move, not a thicker surface on top.

Can steps be added to an existing slope?

Yes, and they are better cut into the slope than stacked on it. Steps tied into the ground stay put. Steps set on the surface creep downhill.

What is the best material for a path?

It depends on the look you want and how the path is used. Pavers are the most forgiving underfoot and the easiest to reset. Flagstone suits treed and sloped lots. Both go on the same base.
